What is Speech Therapy? 

Speech/Language Pathologist (SLPs) employed by public schools provide speech/language therapy to students who meet eligibility requirements outlined in the Rules for Handicapped Children.

Speech/Language Pathologists serving the preschool population provide services to those students with identified needs in the areas of language form (structures of language), language content (language meaning) and language use (how language is used to communicate with others).

Speech/Language Pathologists serve school age students who have communication handicaps that have an adverse impact on the student's performance in and/or ability to access the general curriculum. Students may qualify for services in one or more of the following areas:

  • receptive language (understanding of language)

  • expressive language (language output)

  • articulation (speech sound production)

  • fluency (stuttering)

  • voice (disorders of pitch, resonance, or volume)

Direct services may be provided to individual students or small student groups in the students' classroom or in another space in the building designated for speech/language services. Service may also be provided in collaboration with the classroom teacher or via consultation with the student's educational team.

In addtion to providing speech/language therapy, the Speech/Language Pathologist employed by the Greene County ESC:

  • Evaluate and identify speech/language skills and needs

  • Refer for medical or other services as necessary for the proper evaluation and treatment of the speech/language handicap

  • Consult with parents, students and teachers about communication issues

  • Participate in building or district problem solving teams

  • Serve on building or district committees

  • Train parents and staff in the programming and use of assistive technology

  • Provide inservice in areas of identified need or specialization

Speech/Language Pathologist employed by the Greene County ESC also work with faculty, staff, and families to:

  • Create student specific materials and adaptations, including augmentative communication tools

  • Maintain assistive technology used by students for communication needs

  • Complete documentation necessary for service provision
