Greene ESC Mental Health Services

Description

The Greene County Educational Service Center (GCESC) provides a wide range of student-focused services to support Greene County school districts in meeting their missions to effectively educate youth in the community. GCESC services include special education, speech/language, occupational and physical therapies, preschool, intensive needs, alternative education, vocational transition, gifted, drug/alcohol prevention and mental health services. The GCESC also provides professional development trainings on topics relevant to educators.

GCESC Mental Health Services (GCESC-MHS) is a community mental health agency, certified by ODMH and accredited by CARF. The GCESC-MHS is one of only a few certified community mental health agencies in Ohio that is imbedded in an educational service center. Assessing and treating youth in the context in which they live and grow, both at home and school, are impactful and cost-effective methods of serving the needs of our most vulnerable children. Serving children in their natural environment allows for rapid and sustained progress on treatment goals and helps prevents symptoms from returning.

Population Served

GCESC-MHS serves youth ages 5 to 21 years. Most of the youth served are severely emotionally disturbed (SED), with the typical diagnoses being major mood disorders, anxiety disorders, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders and psychotic disorders; typically Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, cognitive disorders, oppositional defiant disorder and learning disabilities are co-occurring with the above mentioned diagnoses. Referrals come primarily from the school staff and parents.

Programs

GCESC-MHS serves youth within two programs: The Greene County Learning Center and the School-Based Mental Health Program. The Learning Center is a separate educational facility designed to work with children on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) with SED as their primary designation. The School-Based Mental Health Program is designed to provide social work/counseling services to the children on site in their home schools. The programs together form a continuity of services so that children are treated in the least restrictive environment, and are provided opportunities to transition smoothly to and from the home school. On site services are also provided in the ESC alternative schools, The Academy and Outdoor Advantage, as well as at the Greene County Career Center.

Services

GCESC-MHS provides diagnostic assessments, individual counseling, group counseling, family therapy, parent support, crisis intervention, community support services, consultation with education staff and crisis-debriefing services (for major unusual crises faced by schools, such as the death of a student or teacher). Individualized assessments and treatment interventions are empirically based and anchored to sound and established clinical practice.

Staffing

All GCESC-MHS staff are licensed social workers or counselors, most of which are independently licensed and certified to provide school-based mental health services. The Director of MHS is a licensed clinical psychologist. The Learning Center has 6 mental health workers on staff, including the Director. The School-Based Program has 9 mental health workers on staff including the Program Supervisor. The GCESC-MHS employs two support staff.
