ESC Speech Therapists with Superpowers

Many Speech/Language Pathologists in Greene County are successfully and creatively using some new strategies when working with students who have social language problems.  One program, SuperFlex, is getting great reviews from SLPs Mary Ann Patton, Mitch Duncan, and Rebecca Montgomery on how it gets kids onboard and on how it motivates students to look at their own behaviors.  SLP Supervisor Judy Graf explains that the purpose of SuperFlex is to teach students self-awareness, self-monitoring and self-control using related strategies initially introduced in our core conversational structures.

" These talented SLPs have made the capes that help provide the visuals," according to Mrs. Graf, "and they have added the fun that is sometimes needed to help children link their own abilities to their internal discipline and power."  Other SLPs have introduced another program called Social Detective that helps students watch others carefully and methodically to determine socially accepted behaviors. "Social thinking and related teaching strategies are best used when they serve as a launching pad for creative lessons," Judy adds. "For our brighter students our job as teacher is to out clever the clever!"
