Wounded Children, Healing Homes: How Traumatized Children Impact Adoptive and Foster Families. By Jayne E. Schooler, Betsy Keefer Smalley and Timothy J. Callahan Timothy J. Callahan, Psy.D., the Director of Mental Health Services for the Greene ESC and a frequent workshop presenter throughout the region, is also co-author of a new book published by NavPress, Wounded Children, Healing Homes: How Traumatized Children Impact Adoptive and Foster Families . In the book, the authors effectively deal with issues including the power of unmet expectations; adoptive parents and the impact of their own personal trauma history; attachment, development and the impact of trauma; the impact of living with traumatized children on the parents; maltreated kids and school; managing the school challenges; and taking care of yourself, the parent's neglected task. Dr. Callahan, who is a clinical psychologist, received his doctorate from Wright State University and has 20 years of experience working with children and families, as well as adults and teens, in a variety of settings including community mental health centers, private practice, hospitals, schools and correctional facilities. Dr. Callahan previously served as the Chief of Psychology for Ohio’s adult prison system and Clinical Director of a large youth-serving mental health agency.
Dr. Callahan has accumulated a wealth of knowledge about human development and the impact early experiences have on our capacity to thrive. He has worked extensively with adopted and foster children and their families, and continues to be amazed by human resiliency and adaptability. He is committed to helping shed light on the mysteries of human development and is an advocate for an educated, compassionate and artful approach to parenting and treatment.
