Gifted Students Have Busy Year

The May Science Olympiad Culminates a Year of Hard Work

Gifted Students Have Busy Year

Gifted students in Greene County have had a busy year participating in challenging activities offered by the Greene Co ESC. Among the many gifted services provided by the Service Center are the gifted activity days, which emphasize problem solving and creative skills. Grades three through eight take part in these thought-provoking exercises.

In December, the eighth graders enjoyed an interesting contest, which involved solving verbal, special, mathematical and kinesthetic problems at fifteen different stations. After lunch, Dr. Trish Renner gave a computer demonstration on how to negotiate the College Board web site and talked to the students about course work and extra curriculars that they will need as they prepare for college.

In January, third graders through out the county met for Spontaneous Day. During the day students figured out over 100 ways to name nine, or create animal rhymes, or how to pick up cotton balls without using their hands. In the afternoon they had a wild encounter with a Polgar.

Fourth graders stretched their mathematical skills at the Math Pentathlon, which covered numeric computations, algebra, geometry and problem solving. A murder mystery invited the sixth grade students to test their forensic skills and identify who killed Mr. Body.

On April 27, the seventh graders took part in Drama Day where they were part of a performance by Amber Johnson as Harriet Tubman. After the performance the students were involved with some improv exercises.

May brings the Science Olympiad for the fifth graders, which includes activities in rocket science, aeronautics, barge building, architecture and the ever-popular egg drop.
