Every student with autism is an unique individual, so approaches to support students with autism need to be many and varied.  This workshop focuses on research-based strategies to support behavioral and learning activities for students with autism: Applied Behavioral Analysis and Structured Teaching (based on TEACCH).  Instructors will describe the methodologies, discuss the research basis of each, and demonstrate ways to utilize these approaches. Topics include:

ABA: what it is/what it isn’t 

Dispelling myths about ABA

Functional Behavior Assessments and ABA

Why Structured Teaching works to meet the needs of students with ASD.

The 5 components of Structured Teaching (based on TEACCH)  & range of options within each component based on age, developmental level and educational setting

Developing Structured Teaching ideas within each of the 5 components to implement with students with ASD.

 

Presenters:  

Laura Rismiller, PhD., Special Education Supervisor, Beavercreek City Schools, completed her doctoral studies in the area of ABA.  She brings a wealth of informationand perspective to this area

 

Kim Roeser, Teacher, Kettering City Schools, will present from her experience and extensive training in TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped Children) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

                                                $50 per registrant

Antioch McGregor offers 1 qtr hour credit @ $120 for attendance at this one-day workshop (4-page reflection paper required) Ashland University offers 1 sem hour credit @ $180 for two full- day sessions attended. (Both this session and Autism Basics, September 28; separate registration required for each workshop) Grad credit payable to the university on the day of the workshop.
