Bus Safety and Evacuation for Students with Special Needs

Presented by: Jean M. Zimmerman, PT and Linda Fox, Product Specialist, Convaid Inc.

Jean is a recognized specialist in the area of school transportation. Jean has written numerous articles on school bus transportation.  She is a tenured faculty member of the National Conference on Transporting Students with Disabilities.

Linda has provided education throughout the United States regarding the WC-19 and wheelchair safety.

 

Intended Audience: Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Teachers and Transportation Staff

 

Workshop Description: Discussion will include information on the crashworthiness of wheelchairs, transportation of wheelchairs on the school bus and the need for child safety restraint systems for pre-school age children. Participants will also gain experience with school bus evacuation planning and receive hands-on training on an actual school bus. Participants will identify the roles OTs, PTs and transportation personnel play in determining safe and appropriate bus transportation for children with special needs. They will understand WC-19 and its impact on wheelchair design.
