Math Lessons

Drip, Drop, Drip, Drop

(grades 6-8)

In this lesson, students design an experiment to model a leaky faucet and determine the amount of water wasted due to the leak. Using the data they gather in a table, students graph and write an equation.

pdf - lesson

Fill' er Up (up to grade 8)

In this lesson, two containers with different shapes are shown to the class. Each time a measure of water is poured into one container, the number of this measure (x) and the resulting height of the water are plotted on a graph as an ordered pair.

Popcorn

Students are asked to make one tall cylinder and one short cylinder using rectangular sheets of paper of the same size. These two cylinders obviously have the same surface area, but do they have the same volume? Several challenging questions and activities related to surface area and volume are included, as well as presentation materials for teachers.
